Deloitte comments on Police and Crime Commissioner elections

14 November 2012

As 41 new Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs) are about to be elected across England and Wales, James Taylor, lead partner for policing at Deloitte, the business advisory firm, said:

“The hard work begins immediately for the newly-elected Police and Crime Commissioners. They will find themselves in charge of, and accountable for, a vital and visible public service, a workforce of thousands and large businesses that are in the midst of significant change.

“They urgently need to get to grips with current policing operations, figure out how they handle the flood of interest they will face from local government, media and communities and, crucially, look at how they can improve the efficiency of their police forces.

“With central government funding for policing set to decline by 20 per cent and a focus on reforming pay, pensions and paperwork, the financial management of their force, and cutting costs, will be high on each PCC’s agenda.

“Can they free up resources tied up in the police estate, IT systems or back offices? Can they collaborate with neighbouring forces, other public services or the private sector to find savings? Most will not have campaigned on these issues but they will now have to face up to them.

“PCCs have just three months to draft a comprehensive five-year plan for their force, so time is of the essence.”
