Comment on the Bribery Bill

Commenting on the passing of the Bribery Bill, Nic Carrington, forensic partner at Deloitte, said: “The passing of the Bribery Bill marks a step change in the UK’s anti-bribery regime, bringing our legislation into line with, and in certain areas going further than, that of the US and other OECD countries.

“The new Act, with its strict liability offence for corporates which have failed to prevent bribery in their global operations, should act as a trigger for companies to think very seriously about the adequacy of their internal anti-bribery policies and procedures and to conduct appropriate business risk assessments.

“This will not be an inconsequential task, and yes, whilst a commitment has been given by Government to publish high level guidance in advance of the Act coming into force this Autumn, companies nonetheless should be moving ahead as of now with their own reviews to ensure that they are properly prepared in time.”
