Freeview tops poll of TV innovations |
This week marks the 40th anniversary of the first colour transmissions on BBC1 and ITV. UK TV viewers have voted Freeview as the technology with the biggest impact on the way they watch television. In contrast mobile TV continues to have little impact, according to a survey by Deloitte/YouGov.*
When asked to name the three television innovations to have had the greatest impact over their television watching habits over the past five years, 35% chose Freeview, followed by Personal Video Recorders at 29%, and bigger plasma TVs/ Internet television came in joint third at 22%. In contrast, mobile television scored 1%, compared to 0% last year.
Ed Shedd, head of Deloitte’s media practice, commented: “The past 40 years the television industry has seen tremendous innovation from colour television to the arrival of the PVR and the advent of mobile television.
“However it appears that viewers currently have shown little desire to change the way in which they watch TV; watching scheduled television on a traditional set is, for now, still popular.
“We may see a change with Internet Television rising in popularity, as the 18 – 24 generation rises to the fore, 38% of this age group identified it as their first choice of technology (38%), compared to 22% nationally.”
