Recent project experience include:

Atomic (ski equipment)
dcarbon8 measured the life cycle emissions associated with a business as usual high performance freestyle mountain ski boot, the Nuke, and consulted on the design of the ATOMIC Renu to make it as environmentally benign as possible.

Lend Lease, Australia (International property development)

dcarbon8 carried out an assessment of the estimated carbon footprint of Lend Lease’s new flagship development ‘Barangaroo’ in the heart of Sydney’s Darling Harbour. Using an established database of building Life Cycle Assessments, dcarbon8 modelled the likely carbon impacts for each part of the development, setting a baseline and informing a targeted reduction strategy by the developer.

Barrett Steel Buildings (BSB)
dcarbon8 was commissioned to carry out Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for hot-rolled structural steel used in low and multi-rise framing solutions fabricated by BSB. A portion of steel that comes for fabrication is contracted for galvanising. Also included in the assessment is the erection of hot-rolled steel on site, which is fabricated by BSB as well as cold-rolled steel that comes directly to site. In addition, an assessment is carried out for holding down and structural bolts.

This product carbon footprint report measures the climate change impact of steel fabrication at BSB and the carbon footprint impact of the four products used by BSB in the calendar year 2008 (October 2007 – September 2008).

Bryden Wood Associated (contracted by Land Securities) Land development
dcarbon8 was commissioned to undertake a Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) for Land Securities, Ebbsfleet Valley. The entire project covers 17 million square feet of floor space shared between residential, business, retail, leisure and community uses on a 1,035 acre site. Up to 10,000 homes will be built over a 20 year period, including supporting infrastructure of transport, schools, medical centres, offices, shops and leisure facilities. The site includes a number of development zones, for which this project concentrates on Springhead Park and Castle Hill. Springhead has already been completed, and represents a baseline against which the design options for Castle Hill are to be compared. This project provides the results of an assessment undertaken to provide the total carbon impacts for the project.

Jotun Paints, Abu Dhabi
dcarbon8 was commissioned to carry out Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for five paints and compare the environmental performance of the two systems – solvent-based and water-based. Penguard HB White, Penguard Texo White and Durathane White are solventbased paints and Jotashield Alkali Resistant Primer White and Jotashield Thermo White are water-based paints.

This product carbon footprint report measures the climate change impact of the five paints manufactured by Jotun Paints, Abu Dhabi in the calendar year 2007. The methodologies used for analysis are IPCC (2007) Global Warming Potential (GWP) emissions factors for a 100-year timescale and Eco-indicator 99 ‘Ecopoints’.

Lend Lease, Australia
dcarbon8 worked with Lend Lease to carry out a detailed Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of a high rise property within the precinct of Victoria Harbour. This assessment provided a set of key embodied carbon benchmarks that were used to estimate the lifetime carbon impacts of the wider Lend Lease Victoria Harbour development.

The result was a Total Carbon Footprint baseline, used to identify the key focus areas for carbon reduction. dcarbon8 worked with Lend Lease to formalise a Carbon Action Plan (CAP), identifying 11 headline measures that would reduce the embodied carbon footprint up to the point of occupancy by 52% and by 28% over its full lifetime.

Masdar city, property development unit, Abu Dhabi
This tool enables the quick, efficient calculation of the carbon impacts of a building project covering a full Lifecycle Assessment (LCA) from cradle to grave, including onsite activities, operational energy and maintenance. It also enables sustainability teams to design and assess carbon reductions against a baseline scenario, and is consistent with the PAS 2050 carbon standard.

Masdar city, property development unit, Abu Dhabi
Masdar Headquarters (MHQ) is the centre piece building to Masdar city, the zero carbon, zero waste city in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Based on the measure of the carbon impacts of a baseline design of the MHQ from cradle to grave, and through the analysis of several different scenarios, dcarbon8 recommended in this carbon action plan a range of alternative, lower carbon building materials and practices. This covered all building stages from site enabling to fit-out to identify and implement the most cost-effective reductions in the embodied carbon impact and onsite operations.
