A guide to the state of the UK television industry

“Here’s one I made

Supporting the MediaGuardian Edinburgh International Television Festival 2007

Few things fascinate people as much as television. It informs, it entertains, it educates. It enthrals and appals in equal measures. It is one of the most ubiquitous of media and television sets are forecast, in short measure, to outnumber the population of the UK.

The pace of change is unlikely to slow. The internet, high definition, user-generated content, environmental concerns - these are just a few of the factors that are expected, over the next year and beyond, to redefine where we watch television, how it reaches us, who supplies it, which individuals and companies profit from it; indeed what television is.

Deloitte is proud to have been invited to support the MediaGuardian Edinburgh International Television festival this year, by publishing a guide to the state of the UK's television industry, focusing on seven trends that are influencing its development over the next 12 months.

This report was sent to the festival’s 2,000 delegates from across the UK and Europe, positioning Deloitte as the official provider of insight.

The report looks at the following:

  • Will the amateur remain an amateur?  The rise of user-generated content
  • Television's growing screens are far from green. Device proliferation and its associated power consumption
  • High definition gains traction.  Content and equipment driving the growth of HDTV
  • Not yet mobile television's year?  The industry believes in mobile television, but is there appetite from consumers?
  • Internet television's progress is steady but slow.  Consumer experience limited by broadband performance
  • The challenges of comparing new media and traditional media.  No standards in audience measurement
  • IPTV's promise gets closer to realisation.  Recent investments in technology are delivering a growing array of products and services
