The deterioration in the financial and employment markets in the fourth quarter 2008 left many consumers reeling. As a result, confidence tumbled and consumers cut back sharply on all types of spending including travel.
Looking ahead, spending among travellers, already lower because of economic factors, may well remain miserly in 2009. In particular, cost will be a significant factor for travellers.
With the U.S. hotel industry facing such challenges, is it possible that some key U.S. markets may not be impacted as strongly by the downturn.
