Paul has over ten years of sports business experience. He has undertaken a wide range of assignments working with governing bodies, clubs, leagues, rights holders and other sports business organisations in the UK and around Europe.
His advisory work has included several due diligence examinations for potential investors, preparation of expert witness reports, independent business reviews, corporate governance advice, advisory work in respect of sporting rules and integrity of competitions, advice to clubs on revenue generation and cost control, and assistance to UEFA in respect of the development of financial fair play requirements for clients across Europe.
Paul is a qualified Chartered Accountant and provides support to the UK Firm and other worldwide member firms of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu in relation to sporting technical accounting, financial reporting and risk management issues. Paul led the ground-breaking projects to develop ‘Financial Reporting Guidance for Football Clubs’ for both UK GAAP and International Financial Reporting Standards.
Paul has been an author of Deloitte publications for over ten years, including the Deloitte Annual Review of Football Finance. He is a regular media spokesperson on sports business matters.
In a personal capacity, Paul led the development and implementation of the community-backed Rescue Package to save York City FC in 2003 and the subsequent refinancing of the Club approved by members of the Supporters’ Trust in 2006.
