Premier League to be the most represented domestic league at Euro 2012

1 June 2012

A fifth of the players set to represent their national teams at UEFA Euro 2012 play for Premier League clubs, according to analysis by the Sports Business Group at Deloitte.

13% of players at the tournament play their domestic football in the Bundesliga, 9% in La Liga and 8% in Serie A.  In addition to the Premier League providing 20% of the players for the tournament, there will be a further five players from last season’s Championship teams.

Dan Jones, Partner in the Sports Business Group at Deloitte, commented: “The strong representation of the Premier League at UEFA Euro 2012 is a further demonstration of its global appeal and attractiveness to many of the world’s best players. It is notable how closely the representation from the different leagues mirrors the financial scale of the leagues set out in our Annual Review of Football Finance.”

The Annual Review of Football Finance, published earlier this week, showed Premier League clubs’ revenues increased by 12% to £2.3bn in 2010/11.  Broadcasting increased £138m (13%) to £1,178m; matchday revenues totalled £551m, up £20m (4%); and revenue from commercial sources grew £83m (18%) to £600m. The Premier League clubs’ revenues were over 40% more than the Bundesliga’s.  Spain was ranked in third for revenues, though heavily dependent on its two big clubs, Real Madrid and Barcelona. Italy was ranked fourth. Russia was ranked sixth, but is noticeably closing the gap on France in fifth.
