Richard joined the Sports Business Group in 2010, having previously qualified as an accountant in our Birmingham office.
A large proportion of his work is in football, working on a range of projects for clients who include investors, clubs and governing bodies. Richard is also an author of the Annual Review of Football Finance, writing the Wages and Transfers section of the 2013 edition, and on recent projects has advised clients considering an investment in English football clubs on the challenges of managing player costs.
Richard also has experience of working with clubs and governing bodies across other sports, including rugby, cycling and volleyball. Projects have included writing business plans; reviewing budgets; commercial and financial due diligence; drafting strategic plans; benchmarking commercial and performance KPIs; supporting sponsorship activation; reviewing organisational structures; and performing feasibility studies. In addition, he leads the development of the Sports Business Group’s work in analytics.
Over recent months, Richard has built a strong understanding of the business challenges facing the growth of football in Brazil, and has been quoted on the subject in both the Brazilian and the UK press.
Richard takes a strong personal interest in a range of sports, in particular football and basketball. He was involved in the London 2012 Paralympic Games as a Games Maker at the Olympic Stadium.
