Deloitte response to high speed rail announcement |
10 November 2012
Responding to the Government’s approval of a high speed rail (HS2) link between London and Birmingham, Ian Simpson, partner and head of transport at Deloitte, the business advisory firm, says:
"The Government’s approval of the high speed rail link is good news all round. British businesses will benefit from reduced commuting times and improved inter-city links, while the UK economy as a whole will benefit from job creation and longer-term economic benefits.
However, much remains to be done in order to deliver the HS2 project quickly and efficiently.
In the current fiscal climate, funding is especially crucial and there must be certainty for investors and contractors to secure their long-term commitment to this scheme.
Preparation needs to begin in earnest to ensure that once legislation is enacted, which is still some years off, the appropriate planning and financing mechanisms are in place and that there are rigorous governance systems to ensure that HS2 can be delivered on time and on budget.”
