The focus on efficiencies and cost reduction has left no industry or business untouched. Local authorities have always been at the forefront of reducing costs and driving efficiencies in the public sector, but many will now face significant budget gaps in the forthcoming years.
A number of authorities are looking towards shared services as a significant way to reduce the cost of their back office (and in some cases front- office) service delivery. The concept of shared services in not new – they have been implemented in the public and private sectors for some time now, but there are few success stories in local government to date.
