Congestion charging: Working with TfL to change traffic in London

Congestion charging February 2008 cover

Transport for London (TfL) has introduced congestion charging in the central zone of London aiming principally to reduce congestion by 10-15% as well as to generate net revenue surplus of £80 million to £100 million per year. This is the world’s largest congestion charging scheme, involving:

  • A charge zone which is 21 square km in size
  • A network of over 600 enforcement cameras (fixed and mobile) sited at the 174 entry/exit points and within the charging zone
  • The daily monitoring and charging of approx. 200,000 vehicles
  • A broad range of innovative payment options including SMS text messaging from mobile phones used by some 100,000 people per week
  • A post payment solution for fleet operators

Deloitte has significant experience in transport schemes as well as extensive experience of developing and integrating front and back-office systems. This, coupled with our experience from London’s congestion charging, makes us the ideal partner for other road user charging initiatives.
