Insurance market update – January 2012

The Deloitte view for non-life insurers

Insurance market update – January 2012

Background

In our first article, Stephen Ross reviews the value chain within the motor insurance market and examines a number of structural changes which will affect market participants.  In particular, he provides an introduction to Alternative Business Structures which allow outside investment and ownership of law firms. These changes will provide merger and acquisition opportunities which will be attractive to both industry and private equity investors.

Drawing on information presented in our recent seminar on the domestic household insurance market, James Rakow examines how 2011 fared in the aftermath of the huge freeze losses in 2010. He questions whether 2012 will continue the trend from 2011 given current concerns over flood and escape of water perils.

Key findings

In this issue, we focus on changes to the claims value chain in the motor market arising from the banning of referral fees and the introduction of Alternative Business Structures, and also consider the state of the domestic household market.
