Background
The maritime industry is the work horse for global trade and development. It is responsible for almost 90 percent of world trade and is one of the cleanest modes of transport when compared on a ton-mile basis with other modes of transport. It is also one of the most heavily regulated industries, with scores of rules developed in the past 20 years.
Yet, there seems to be a radical disconnect with the outside world in terms of the maritime industry’s transparency and credibility. Its failure to address sustainability and climate change issues at a macro level is now causing the maritime industry to be perceived as having soft governance.
In order for shipping to remedy this perception, it needs to address climate change and sustainability challenges within the industry’s unique set of issues.
