Deloitte comments on latest ONS retail sales data
20 June 2013
Commenting on today’s ONS retail sales figures, Ian Geddes, UK head of retail at Deloitte, said: “The uplift demonstrated in today’s retail sales figures will provide the embattled high street with a note of cheer. Economic indicators, such as inflation, are still fluctuating from month to month making it difficult to get a true reflection of the market. However, consumers have emerged from the prolonged period of cold weather and our own research suggests they are feeling more confident about their capacity to spend.
“Looking to the coming months, this summer will be far more typical following the significant market distortions of the Jubilee celebrations and Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012. Many retailers are running lean, keeping a close eye on costs as conditions overall remain tough. However, investment in innovation must remain a priority as retailers look to create value and differentiate themselves from their competitors through their service and product offering in an increasingly digital world.”
