Toby is a director based in our Birmingham office and is one of Deloitte’s national experts on direct tax issues for charities and not-for-profit bodies. He is a corporate tax specialist with over 20 years experience of advising not-for-profit bodies, including charities (in particular, Universities and registered social housing providers), mutual organisations, non-departmental public bodies and local authority controlled entities.
He has a particular interest in real estate transactions and is familiar with the direct tax issues surrounding Higher Education, the provision of social housing, including advice on group structures, charitable conversion and structuring joint ventures with the private sector.
Toby is a member of the Deloitte Real Estate Tax group and has significant experience advising on property transactions for REITs, property companies as well as charitable and not-for-profit entities. He has also been a regular contributor to external conferences on mixed use development and property joint ventures. For the last three years, he has been a guest speaker at the British Universities Finance Directors Group annual tax conference.
Relevant clients
Toby’s charity clients include the Design Museum and a number of universities, including the Universities of Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham and Queen’s University Belfast. He also provides technical input to our audits of the Universities of Oxford and Nottingham. He also acts for arts charities such as Birmingham Royal Ballet and not-for-profit institutions such as the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales.
His public sector controlled clients include The National Exhibition Centre Ltd and the Agricultural and Horticultural Development Board. He also advises a number of Housing Associations and RPs on direct tax matters including Radian, Synergy and Walsall Housing Group.
Toby advises a number of commercial property companies including St Modwen plc, Taylor Wimpey and A&J Mucklow Group. He has also advised on complex real estate transactions involving groups such as David Lloyd Leisure.
