Issues & Trends

Dealing with the risks and opportunities associated with this is therefore of considerable importance in terms of the impact on margins and cash flow. Our local team can help you better understand these complex issues and provide you with commercial solutions which improve compliance and ensure indirect tax benefits are optimised.

Environmental taxes

As environmental issues soar up the political agenda, different ‘green’ taxes have been introduced by governments across the globe to encourage greener behaviour. These taxes affect a wide range of businesses.

Unlike VAT, there is no common system of environmental taxes within the European Union. As such, businesses need to be aware of their obligations throughout the countries in which they operate. Here in the United Kingdom we have a well-established set of environmental taxes (climate change levy, landfill tax and aggregates levy) and there are plans to significantly increase the rates of some of these taxes over the coming years.

Our local team can help you to negotiate the increasingly complex field of ‘green taxes’, explore cost saving opportunities in this area and help various reliefs and exemptions from environmental taxes available for more environmentally friendly business practices.

Customs & Global Trade

Developing an optimal global trade strategy that enables your overall business strategy is a complex task. Our team works with organisations across a range of industry sectors and is focused on helping you to develop effective internal controls governing trade operations, duty management and customs compliance. Our team has in-depth knowledge of customs-related policies and national regulations, as well as local country practices. With advisers in both complex international trade regulations and effective internal controls, we are ideally placed to advise clients on the best practice for integrating the two.

Dispute Resolution and Litigation

Indirect Tax in the UK is a particularly litigious area and there have been over 20,000 cases heard by the Tribunal and the courts in the UK since the tax was introduced in 1973. If you have a dispute with HMRC our team will first help you to try to resolve it without recourse to litigation. We can guide your relationship with HMRC. Our experience in handling HMRC enquiries means we are well placed to assist, helping to preserve the assets and reputation of your business. Our success is built on building open relationships with clients. We have a very good understanding of HMRC and can offer key insights into its approach. We work closely with you to identify current and historical risks and devise strategies that not only provide positive outcomes, but which also maintain good working relationships with HMRC.

If resolution without litigation is not possible our team can assist you throughout the appeal process, with support both before and after, as well as representing you at the Tax Tribunal. Our local team has extensive experience across all industry sectors, providing advice in relation to: time limits and assessments; penalties and interest; supply chain management; contract review; appeals to the Lower and Upper Tier Tax Tribunal; and appeals to the higher courts including the European Court of Justice.
