Adam Smith


Adam SmithAdam leads the Deloitte Forensic team in the Midlands, the South West and Wales. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and was admitted to the partnership in 2008.

Adam provides a range of forensic advisory and financial fraud and corruption investigation services to clients.  He has worked in the field of forensic accounting for more than 17 years and has worked on some of the leading corporate investigations of recent times. Such assignments have involved:

  • Investigating irregularities identified at a Welsh subsidiary of a UK listed company from which it was established that the results and net asset position of the subsidiary had been significantly overstated through false accounting;
  • Working alongside administrators and liquidators of businesses to advise on recovery routes available and to provide investigation (including asset tracing) expertise;
  • Advising organisations on the appropriate response to whistleblower allegations and conducting such investigations; and
  • Advising organisations on the commercial implications of complex contractual arrangements that they had entered into.

Adam regularly acts as the accounting expert in disputed matters. He has prepared many expert account reports which, inter alia, assess quantum in a range of contractual and other situations. In such a role he regularly attends meeting of experts and mediations. Adam has given evidence in a number of matters including providing expert testimony in the High Court. He regularly provides assistance to legal teams and Counsel in preparation for and during the course of trials. Adam has frequently been appointed the Independent Expert by parties to resolve disputed matters in the context of sale and purchase agreement completion account and earn out disputes and other contractual disputes such as operating agreements. Adam has also advised a number of clients in respect of the quantification of losses that they have suffered as a result of the anti-competitive behaviour of other organisations, including follow-on claims from CAT awards.

He has experience of a wide range of industries and business sectors including: manufacturing, aerospace and defence, public sector, consumer business, professional services and financial services.
