The second Deloitte Ignite festival took place on 4-6 September 2009 and hit headlines for its dazzling array of performances and exhibits and novel use of technology in Twitter Opera. There was something for everyone from lying down at a chilled-out classical concert, to watching new magic artists (and laughing lots!), dressing-up and taking part in a mirror ball disco, watching the premiere of the TwitterOpera to attending a night of Grime or a Vogue Ball.
The theme, 'A Festival of Mirrors', was curated by TimeOut. As Rachel Halliburton, Deputy Editor at TimeOut reflects, “Deloitte Ignite 09 was about letting art forms other than opera invade the building, inhabiting its extraordinary array of rooms, corridors and halls, so that new ideas could challenge the old and fresh blood could infiltrate its traditions.
The central theme – the mirror – incorporated the ideas of turning the world back to front, and of allowing people to examine themselves from new angles...this happened through comedy or video art, participatory dance or site-specific theatre, beneath the bright lights of the grand finale ball or in the intimate darkness of a new dance piece.”
Deloitte Ignite won two prestigious sponsorship awards in 2009 from Arts and Business, Winner of the A&B Cultural Branding Award and the Hollis Sponsorship Award 2009 for 'Best Art Sponsorship'.
