The inaugural Deloitte Ignite festival took place between 12-14 September 2008. It achieved its goal of attracting a diverse audience into the Royal Opera House, with 60% visiting for their first time. Amongst the crowds were young and old, families and even an A-list celebrity. Oscar award winning actress Nicole Kidman spent two hours on the Sunday exploring the festival at ease.
Wayne McGregor, award-winning choreographer-in-Residence to the Royal Ballet, was the curator for Deloitte Ignite 08. The focus for the first festival was around the senses – how we experience the world and create meaning from it. Wayne selected artists whose work makes us become aware of spaces, bodies, times and events that are unfamiliar, often prioritising a certain combination of senses whilst re-directing others; highlighting aspects of hidden information whilst making visible the unnoticed.
In the run up to the inaugural Deloitte Ignite, the festival reached millions of people (both nationally and in London), encouraging and inviting everyone along to see and explore a different side to the Royal Opera House and change their perceptions both of the Royal Opera House and Deloitte.
