Teach First is an independent charity established in 2002 following a McKinsey and Business in the Community pro bono study into how businesses could improve secondary education in London. The objective of Teach First is to address educational disadvantage by transforming exceptional graduates into effective, inspirational teachers and leaders in all fields. Graduates commit two years to teaching in some of the challenging schools in the UK.
Beyond the initial two years of teaching, graduates are actively supported to remain engaged in widening access to education for young people in their roles as Teach First Ambassadors. For the 50% that remain in teaching this is through maximising their impact as urban school leaders. For the 50% that leave the classroom, a programme of social change programmes is in place to enable their continued impact on the Teach First mission including mentoring of gifted pupils, taking on the role of school governor and engaging in the policy debate. Through the ambassador programme Teach First aims to build a body of outstanding leaders in all sectors of society with the skills, resources, networks and knowledge to substantially reduce educational inequalities and their root causes. Teach First achieve this through tailored leadership training developed with over 100 employers.
Deloitte is a Platinum Sponsor of Teach First. Deloitte is currently working with the Teach First Board to deliver a pro bono project looking at how Teach First can better harness the capabilities of corporate supporters.
Secondary School Mentoring is one of the firm's core Community Investment Programmes and each Deloitte office has its own scheme. Mentors meet their mentees once a month over two years, providing advice and guidance on all aspects of their school life and future careers. The scheme aims to help provide role models to young people from disadvantaged communities and help bridge the gap between the world of work and the world of education.
Deloitte’s reading partner scheme supports primary and secondary school pupils with their reading and speaking and listening skills. Our number partner scheme helps primary or secondary school pupils to improve their mental maths through playing number games supplied by the school. This scheme also helps to boost their confidence with numbers.
The Prince’s Trust is one of Britain’s leading charities supporting young people between 18 and 30 into training and employment. Deloitte has been a patron of the Trust for the past five years and Heather Hancock, Managing Partner Brand and Innovation, serves as a trustee of the charity.
Our community investment programmehas acted as Prince’s Trust business mentors for more than 100 Deloitte volunteers over the past ten years, and has provided support and guidance to young people who are setting up their own businesses with the help of a loan from the Trust. The scheme is so successful that many of these start-up businesses are still trading after three years.
