Heather Hancock joined Strategy in 2003 and is the practice’s ‘industry lead’ for the public sector. Her team helps public sector clients, at national and regional level, to get the execution plan right for new policy initiatives. It’s a rapidly growing part of the Strategy practice, doubling in size over the last 12 months.
Heather came to Deloitte following a career spanning over 15 years in the public sector. She has been private secretary to three Home Secretaries, a member of the Senior Civil Service, and run a major quango and a special local authority. As a result, Heather has an intimate understanding of the machinery of Government, first-hand experience of governance and accountability across the public sector, and knows how policy aspirations can be translated into practical action.
She relishes the intellectual challenge that consulting in the public sector provides. Government aims to do more difficult things, more often, than any other sector, she says. That’s why driving analysis towards an implementable solution is an essential part of the job. “If we’ve delivered strategy work for a client and they turn around and say, ‘OK, now implement it,’ it’s a hallmark of Deloitte’s approach that we’d have no problem in doing so,” she says.
Alongside her work advising clients on the formulation and execution of public policy, Heather also leads the development of Consulting’s services in climate change and sits on the firm’s Board.
A varied portfolio is all part of the excitement of Strategy at Deloitte, but Heather admits it also demands proper downtime. Living in the Yorkshire Dales and being passionate about gardening are her antidotes – for peaceful reflection on clients’ challenges, and really getting her hands dirty in practice.
