Digital Business Done Mainly by Companies from the Telecom and Banking Sectors

"In terms of the use of digital strategies in the Czech Republic, mobile-phone operators rank first, using digital strategies twice as much as companies from other sectors"

- Petr Viktora,
Director in the ICT Advisory department of Deloitte

Prague, 12 March 2013 - Digital strategy, including, for instance, the use of social networks, blogs, web or mobile applications, is of special interest to companies operating mainly in the telecommunication and banking sectors, followed by insurance companies, lottery companies and betting offices. Contrarily, power companies and pharmaceutical companies pay only minimal attention to digital strategies. These are the results of a new study entitled “Digital Business: an Opportunity or a Bubble?” released by Deloitte Czech Republic. The study objective was to map the use of digital technology in individual industries at the end of 2012.

“In terms of the use of digital strategies in the Czech Republic, mobile-phone operators rank first, using digital strategies twice as much as companies from other sectors. Second place belongs to banking institutions, which manage to use the individual digital channels very well despite the nature of their business. Contrarily, power industry companies along with pharmaceutical companies have significant room for improvement in the digital world,” said Petr Viktora, Director in the ICT Advisory department of Deloitte, commenting on the results of the study.

“The study reveals that a universal recipe and recommendation for all does not exist; individual digital activities need to be unified and harmonised with respect to the company’s overall strategy and objectives. Appropriate SEO setting and web page optimisation are currently the prerequisites for efficient digital communication with customers. According to the latest surveys, 2.5 million people in the Czech Republic use mobile internet. Therefore, Deloitte, as one of the first advisory and audit companies, has recently launched a new web site for mobile devices, such as smartphones or tablets,” Petr Viktora added.

Digital Strategies in Europe

According to the study, the level of digital maturity and the involvement of digital technology in a company’s overall strategy have been improving in Western European companies every year. “The digital maturity of Europe and the USA, which is the world power in terms of digital technology, is at approximately the same level in spite of the enormous difference in the past. However, if we compare digital maturity in Western European countries and in the Czech Republic, our country, despite the endeavour of newly-emerging start-ups and local firms, is still two or three years behind the development in Western Europe,” said Petr Viktora.

About the Study

The data were collected in November 2012. The analysis covered the 44 largest companies in the Czech Republic that were divided into seven industries. The study used hard metrics focused on “pro-customer” digital channels to evaluate the individual industries. Each company was assessed through 15 criteria that were further grouped into four thematic areas. The evaluation was based on the website solution, social activities, solution for mobile devices, and blogging. These areas of “digital scanning” were selected as the most significant in terms of achieving the business objectives through digital channels.
