Deloitte presents top honour to Peking University in the Deloitte Tax Championship 2009 |

The Deloitte Tax Championship 2009, a key academic event in the Greater China Region, was concluded with huge success in Shanghai on 29 October 2009. Displaying outstanding performance in the National Final Competition, Peking University was awarded the champion with Macau University of Science & Technology and South China University of Technology became the first and second runner-up of the Championship, respectively.
A total of 11 finalist teams entered the National Competition during which the contestants were challenged to analyse a simulated business case and present their solutions to a panel of judges comprised of senior tax officials, clients and tax partners of Deloitte China. An award presentation ceremony was held on 30 October 2009 in Shanghai.
At the same time, authors of the eight shortlisted essays also made presentations to a panel of judges at the Championship's Essay Competition. The best paper honour was awarded to Fu Jiang Feng of Wuhan University, Hu Bin of Southwestern University of Finance & Economics and Wang Xiao Xi of Peking University. A total of 26 papers on China tax topics were received this year. The key objective of the Essay Competition is to promote in-depth tax research and analysis among postgraduate students.
This year's Championship, now in its sixth year, has attracted a record high number of participants. Over 200 students from 54 top universities, across the Mainland, Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR and Taiwan participated which is twice the number of participating teams that took part in the first year of the competition in 2004.
Mr Joseph Tse, Tax Managing Partner of Deloitte China, said, "It is very encouraging to see a record high number of universities taking part in this competition every year. Since its introduction in 2004, the competition has become an increasingly important event in academia in the Greater China Region. This demonstrates that our efforts of creating wider interest in tax studies and promoting overall excellence in the areas of taxation is well recognised and supported by the teachers and students."

Over the years, we continue to see students' ability enhanced and their level of performance improved at the competition. We will continue to promote tax education and raise the awareness of taxation and its sophistication level for the country by way of the Tax Championship and the other programs conducted by Deloitte Tax Research Foundation," said Mr Tse.
Mr Alan Tsoi, Tax Partner of Deloitte China and Chairman of the Deloitte Tax Championship Organising Committee, said, "The case study competition assessed students' ability to apply their classroom knowledge solving real business cases. In the competition, the students needed to show their understanding and analysis of the cases as well as application of relevant rules and regulations to identify the fundamental business and tax issues and provide solutions within three hours. It's a neck-to-neck competition and all the finalists displayed exemplary performance and the overall performance of students is very impressive. "
Commenting on the performance of the essay writers, Mr Joe Fu, Tax Partner of Deloitte China who chaired the judging panel for Essay Competition, said, "We are impressed to receive quality essays which discussed various tax topics under the new tax environment. Most of the essays were well-written demonstrating students' profound knowledge of theories and outstanding analytical skills. We are particularly pleased to see the finalists have demonstrated high level of professionalism in the competition."
Professor Liu Yi, who led the Champion team of Peking University said, "The Deloitte Tax Championship has been held successfully for six years and become a remarkable event in the campus calendar. The competition not only kindles students' passion in taxation study, but also gives them inspiration for their career planning. We would like to thank Deloitte for organising such a professional competition which gives me and my students an opportunity to understand the work of a professional services firm and to experience the Deloitte corporate culture."
The 11 finalist teams included Dongbei University of Finance & Economics, Huazhong University of Science & Technology, Jinan University, Macau University of Science & Technology, Peking University, Soochow University (located in Taipei), South China University of Technology, Southwestern University of Finance & Economics, The University of Hong Kong, Xiamen University and Zhongnan University of Economics & Law. They won in the group competitions that were held in Beijing, Dalian, Guangzhou, Hong Kong SAR, Shanghai and Taipei on 29 August.
The Deloitte Tax Championship is a key initiative of the Deloitte Tax Research Foundation, which promotes education, research and innovation in the field of taxation by supporting an array of national and local programs.
