Since they first began integrating sustainable practices into their products, services and operations, Canadian businesses have realized significant economic gains. However, the days of picking the low-hanging sustainability fruit are over. In an environment where companies are expected to do more with less, companies are looking to raise the bar, reach high and wide, and create innovative sustainability opportunities. To address these challenges and opportunities, a group of Canadian business leaders met in September 2012 to identify the sustainability challenges they face within their organizations, value chains, marketplace, |
government and society. The results of this meeting are contained in Changing the system: the 10 sustainability challenges for Canadian business in 2013, a report produced by the Network for Business Sustainability (NBS) with the help of Deloitte.
In addition to setting out the 10 challenges that limit sustainable development for Canadian businesses, this report considers the actions business leaders must take on a go-forward basis, such as the need to:
- Look beyond organizational boundaries to educate consumers about responsible consumption
- Collaborate with industry peers to engage stakeholders across the value chain
- Work with regulators to develop integrated environmental and social policies
