7. Building your strategic plan 101
Presented by:
Ken Brownlee, Senior Manager
Shelley Jahnke, Senior Manager
All companies struggle with today’s business complexities – trying to manage risks and seize opportunities. Large companies may have dedicated groups of people focusing on specific issues, but the reality for the vast majority of the Canadian business marketplace is that small teams deal with a broad range of matters. They likely do not have the depth of expertise required to address all matters and certainly do not have large blocks of time to dedicate to specific items. Our Advisory group works with small to mid-sized companies to provide the needed expertise to address specific matters on an expedited basis. Sometimes all these companies need is a different perspective, a discussion with a subject matter expert, or someone to facilitate an executive team. Dedicating short time slots to work “on the business” instead of “in the business” can yield exponential dividends for these companies.
This presentation will highlight critical steps to developing strategy, some key pitfalls and best practices that your company can leverage.
Ken Brownlee is a Senior manager at Deloitte and is highly experienced in IFRS, U.S. GAAP and Canadian GAAP. During his career in Ottawa and Calgary, he has worked with private and public companies in a variety of different industries including manufacturing, services and technology. He has also served a number of clients in an advisory capacity helping clients to operate more efficiently and effectively, as well as implement process improvements.

12. The strategic advantage of oil and gas resource evaluations in an unconventional world
Presented by:
Dave Russum, Senior Manager
The oil and gas industry has seen radical changes as a result of using the dual technologies of horizontal drilling and multistage fracturing. These technologies have opened opportunities to produce hydrocarbons from many different unconventional reservoirs. The cost of developing these reservoirs is extremely high so companies must be able to show that the potential prize justifies the investment. Independently prepared resource reports provide a method for stakeholders to assess individual projects and compare with other opportunities early in the investment cycle. The updating of these reports and consultative relationships between the client and evaluator can ensure that the client develops the best possible plan to ultimately convert the project into bookable reserves. This presentation will address what a resource report is, how it is prepared, and how it can be used both within a company and in the marketplace.
Dave Russum, Senior Manager, Energy and resource advisory services, Financial advisory, is a geologist by training and has spent much of his career exploring and developing oil and gas fields in Canada for Amoco, Crestar Energy and Geo-Help Inc. His credits include drilling the second most prolific gas well ever drilled in Canada. In the 1990s, he recognized the limitation of conventional reservoirs to meet North America’s oil and gas needs and began independent research into unconventional reservoirs. He has followed the development of the unconventional industry for more than fifteen years and has presented many papers on the subject to technical societies, regulatory bodies, the general public and academia.
