Scenarios and strategies for the future of work in Canada

In CanadaWorks 2025, Deloitte’s Human capital practice and the Human Resources Professionals Association (HRPA) examine the fundamental drivers of change to help us safeguard a healthy and prosperous Canadian workplace in 2025.

Though we appear to be well positioned, we are currently facing some very real challenges: the sustainability of our industries, the competitiveness of our firms, the quality of our employment, the inclusivity of our workplaces and our level of innovation. But there are strategies we can implement to help guide us in the right direction.

Based on extensive research and insights from over 50 experienced interviewees, this report introduces three possible futures for Canada’s workplace and workforce – the lost decade, unsustainable prosperity and the northern tiger.

The lost decade and unsustainable prosperity illustrate how the future might look for Canada if we continue to a lesser or greater extent along the path of least resistance. However, we envision a dramatically different future for Canada. We have identified strategies for success, which if adopted; Canada could achieve a brighter, more sustainable future as the northern tiger.

The strategies presented in CanadaWorks 2025 will position us to improve our labour market efficiency, productivity, employment contract, and the very structure of work itself. If we are to become the northern tiger, we need to take action now – 2025 is sooner than we think. In order to realize a positive future for the Canadian workplace, we must act together and focus our efforts on critical problems. We can, and we must, invent a prosperous future for Canada.
