Sustainable development

Sustainable development Sustainable development is at the heart of the vision for the Plan Nord, and the objectives set out to ensure environmental protection and socio-economic development will require all parties involved, especially the mining companies, to deal with the challenges of sustainable development in designing and executing the projects to be carried out in Northern Quebec.

For example, every phase of a mining project lifecycle has significant environmental, social and economic impacts, which represent risks and opportunities for a mining company. Sustainable development poses multiple challenges, such as the involvement of local communities from the exploration phase and beyond, occupational health and safety, technological and environmental innovation in operating methods, and site restoration after project completion. This is why businesses need to respond strategically right from the start.

Assess the opportunities and risks
Stakeholders in the mining industry have mounting expectations and the social acceptability of future mining projects will be a decisive factor in their development. These stakeholders include Aboriginal communities, public authorities (municipalities, government representatives, etc.), environmental and social groups, and other organizations affected by mining or having an influence on the industry. Today it is essential for Plan Nord stakeholders, especially mining companies, to weigh the risks and opportunities associated with sustainable development and to be able to demonstrate how their projects align with government sustainable development objectives.

Deloitte helps both private and public organizations to seize these opportunities and strategically integrate sustainability issues into their projects and activities.

Our services:

  • Sustainable development diagnostics, strategies and action plans
  • Stakeholder commitment (e.g., preparation of public hearings, consultations, communications)
  • Managing risks associated with sustainable development and climate change (including financial, regulatory and physical risks)
  • Managing energy and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (energy strategy, scenarios for compliance with the GHG emissions trading system requirements)
  • Evaluating the return on investments in sustainable development
  • Audit of financial and non-financial information related to environmental and social matters (e.g., audit of sustainable development reports, review of internal controls to measure performance)
  • Communications strategy on sustainable development (e.g., integrated sustainability report –  Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)).
