Governments need to respond now to the challenge of innovation. The expectations of Canadians are greater than ever in terms of the ability of government to deliver new, high demand services in a timely and cost effective manner. Citizens continually see evidence of rapid advancement and innovation across the private sector and, as a result, the public sector must be receptive to change and the exploration of viable alternatives – the old way of doing things is no longer adequate.
Current approaches to innovation are insufficient to deliver the level of change that most government organizations require. It is necessary for governments to accept a new approach to innovation – an integrated model for innovative government consisting of three interrelated dimensions: governance, management and design.
Innovative government: Shaping long-term success provides an integrated, agency-wide approach to promoting innovation in government. The approach encapsulates moving toward a more fundamental commitment to developing a culture of innovation within government.
