Despite a rocky few years of restructurings, difficulty accessing capital and significant patent challenges, the life sciences industry in Alberta is booming, thanks to a growing number of innovative companies that are capitalizing on the province’s efforts to diversify its economy. We teamed up with our client, BioAlberta – a member-based not-for-profit representing the Alberta industry – to survey the leaders of life science companies in the province. The result was Life sciences in Alberta: State of the industry 2011 , our second bi-annual report assessing the current landscape and what’s just ahead for a growing industry. |
Here’s a preview of what we found:
- Company formation in life sciences and biotechnology in Alberta has exploded in the last few years, and that number is on the rise.
- Respondents expect that there will be an influx in R&D spending in 2011 and 2012 as a result of increased capital ($148.5 million and $184.2 million respectively, compared to $128.8 million in 2010).
- A range of government-run programs, founder equity, and angel and corporate investors is providing the foundation for organizations to grow and develop.
- Respondents expect a substantial rise in revenue (an increase of 25% in 2011) and jobs (4,700 in 2011 and 6,000 in 2012) in the next few years.
