Health care financial executives across Canada are currently facing significant challenges as a result of changing roles and responsibilities, a lack of readily available and appropriate information, inadequate decision support tools and insufficient resources to effectively meet evolving expectations. The role of financial executives in the health care field has undergone a radical transformation during the last decade – and the impact of this shift is reaching a pressure point.
Deloitte conducted a survey of Canadian health care financial executives to examine the important issues related to the financial management of health care organizations and the impact within the Canadian health care industry. The purpose of this study was to identify the unique issues and challenges of health care CFOs and the degree to which these are prevalent on a national basis. The intent was to:

Understand the differences between rural and urban challenges
Results were collected from interviews with 74 urban and rural health care financial executives from regional health authorities and hospitals across Canada. Survey results point to the need to address the alarming shortage of robust information and resources for health care financial executives across Canada. Key findings included:
