The report also highlights specific areas where the industry can improve the way it does business, including adopting models of cost-efficiency and corporate structure from other sectors, improving accountability in hiring contractors, and better collaboration with governments and within the industry itself. Following the format of the 2011 edition, Gaining ground lists 10 key areas for concentrated improvement and consideration in the oil sands, for both the short- and medium-terms:
