The fifth edition of Deloitte’s Consumer Business economic update for Canada provides a snapshot of key business indicators across the retail, consumer packaged goods (CPG) and travel, hospitality and leisure (THL) sectors.

The newsletter also aggregates search-related data for online travel, products and shopping with social media trends and analyst sentiment.

Economic indicators
  • The Canadian economy continues to show strong signs of a recovery, posting a second consecutive quarter of 2.8% GDP growth.
Retail trends
  • For the first time in six quarters, same store sales growth rates improved versus the latest quarter across Canada’s largest retailers.
Travel, hospitality and leisure trends
  • The THL sector saw across the board growth in hotel, tourism and food service sub-sectors.
Consumer packaged goods
  • The CPG sector is experiencing strong growth in the food and beverage category, while household supplies and health and personal care products lag.
Social media
  •  Classified ads website “kijiji” takes the number one spot, while “walmart” surpasses “netflix” into the number two spot.
