Entering the 2010 holiday shopping season, Canadians will remain cautious with their money, as paying down debt will be a key priority for consumers. This annual publication—developed by Deloitte and based on Ipsos research—offers an in-depth look into consumer spending intentions, key trends within the retail industry, the impact of new technology and how it’s changing the way people research and purchase items.

Highlights from this year’s survey include:

  • 52% of Canadians plan to spend the same as they did last year, while 44% plan to spend less and only 4% plan to increase their spending.
  • 70% of Canadians will use blogs, social media forums, store websites and other online shopping tools to conduct shopping activities online.
  • 14% of respondents plan to use mobile applications to help them shop.
