Security can’t be discounted2009 Consumer Business Global Security Study |
Consumer business organizations have a unique place in the global economy. They are the “front lines” when it comes to customer information because of the volume of personal and financial data they are entrusted with. It is more important than ever that information security is sophisticated and cutting edge because of the very characteristics of the threats that face us.
Security can’t be discounted, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu’s Consumer Business Global Security Study, identifies the security issues and threats that organizations in the industry are facing. It also highlights some of the solutions and initiatives being undertaken by peer organizations around the world.
This study reveals that:
- Information security is still considered primarily a technology infrastructure issue – respondents identify their top security initiative for 2009 as security infrastructure improvement.
- Respondents are placing a significantly less prominent focus on security governance.
- Business continuity planning and disaster recovery are still not getting the attention they deserve.
In recessionary times, there is huge pressure to reduce costs – a large number of security budgets have actually been reduced. Such times also produce unique circumstances that work against the achievement of good security. For instance, inadvertent errors and omissions of disgruntled and overworked employees are responsible for much of the collective security challenge faced by the industry. As counterintuitive as it may seem, recessionary times are actually when security must be made stronger and smarter.
