Alumni profile: Andrew Snelgrove

Tell us a little about yourself.

I was born and raised in Harbour Grace, Newfoundland, which is located on the east coast of the province. I completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree at Dalhousie University and later completed my CA professional designation while articling at Deloitte in the St. John’s office.

When did you work for Deloitte? What was your title and role in the firm?

I started as a co-op student in the Halifax office in 2001 and I worked there until 2004. Then I moved to the St. John’s office, where I was a senior accountant with the Assurance group from 2004 to 2006.

What was the highlight of your career experience with Deloitte?

The people! The organization and the offices where I worked in particular had fantastic people. Both offices hired individuals who had shared values and interests. I learned a great deal while working at Deloitte, but I also very much enjoyed the social aspect and the friendships that I made.

Which organization did you join after you left Deloitte?

After Deloitte, I went to Clarke Inc. where I still work today. I joined Clarke as a Manager of Financial Reporting, subsequently advancing to the Corporate Controller position and ultimately being promoted to my current role as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer.

What’s the best part of your current role?

As Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, I lead the financial reporting and accounting, budgeting, treasury, risk management and several operational functions of the company. The best part of my role is the exposure I get to a broad range of businesses. Clarke is an investment holding company that generally takes an active role in its investments. I’ve had the opportunity to be involved in these businesses and because of it, I’ve gained a great deal of experience.

How would you describe the secret of your success?

I have been very fortunate over the years to work with and be mentored by some great and brilliant people. Learning as much as possible from these people has been invaluable. I would also attribute my career progression to hard work and dedication.

Do you keep in touch with other Deloitte alumni?

Most definitely. I keep in touch with alumni from both a professional and personal perspective. Professionally, Deloitte acts as Clarke’s auditors and, as a public company, this means frequent communication. Personally, some very close friends of mine are still at Deloitte. I expect that the relationships I established while working at Deloitte will last a lifetime.
