Staying connected helps alumni attain their professional goals
|Keeping in touch with Deloitte’s Alumni Connections program can help you attain your career goals and figure out your next career move. Brad Dever attended an alumni event a few years ago, and it started a conversation that brought him back to Deloitte. His first stint —and his first job out of university — was as a PeopleSoft ERP implementation specialist. He was with the firm from 1996 to 1999, when he left for a role that offered him greater travel opportunities.|
But because he kept in touch, he learned that the firm had a growing interest in leveraging its global benchmarking capabilities within the Canadian market. “It was over a few cocktails at one of the alumni events that I made the decision to pursue this benchmarking role,” recalls Brad. “That’s where the dialogue began about how we could build it,” and the rest is history. Brad returned with years of benchmarking experience as Canadian country manager for a global benchmarking firm, and now he leads Deloitte’s Canadian benchmarking agenda.
“It’s fascinating to observe how often people come back,” says alumni leader Richard Carson. The tendency to boomerang back to Deloitte is fairly common. What is it that brings people back? “I think they come back for the culture, the type of firm we are, and the way we treat our people.” Others cite the calibre of people, the camaraderie and the strong friendships they developed. It’s a transition that’s undoubtedly easier for those who’ve stayed in touch. “With a long-time active network of Deloitte people and fond memories of my early days here…, the transition back to the firm has proven to be a great fit and an enjoyable next chapter,” says Brad. Some might feel there’s a stigma about returning. “I’ve seen people out in industry, and they’re miserable, but they’re afraid to come back,” says Calgary’s Chris Johnston. “Perhaps they think that if they leave and come back, it seems like they made a mistake.”

Chris had no such trepidation, and it’s a decision that’s paying off. “I’m very happy doing what I’m doing.” He rejoined in December 2006, and he’s quickly approaching his five-year anniversary. “I have lots of flexibility in my job, I get compensated well, and I don’t work any more hours than when I was in industry.” While he was away, he kept in contact with a couple of partners that he’d worked with on client engagements. “We’d get together for lunches now and again, and I would go to the alumni events in Calgary.” That made it easier to return to his team when the time was right.
Of course, returning to Deloitte may not mean returning at all. If you’re looking to make a career move, tapping into your alumni network is a great place to start. Keeping in touch with friends and colleagues can facilitate the network effect — something you need when you’re seeking a change. Returning to Deloitte may simply mean attending a cocktail event and reconnecting. “To be honest, at the beginning, I’d go to the alumni events in the hopes of seeing my old friends,” says Halifax’s Amy Glynn.
As an alumnus, your needs change over the course of your career. In the early years, you may just want to keep up your continuing education and see old friends. As your career ramps up, you may find that the firm’s thoughtware and learning opportunities help you build a reputation as a strategic thinker or potential leader. Once you’ve established yourself as an influencer in your chosen industry, you may be in a position to make referrals or invite the firm to bid on a proposal. At that point, your involvement may be less about seeing old friends and more about facilitating business. For retired partners, the relationship is largely about maintaining a professional network and keeping current with industry trends — particularly for those who sit on boards or work for philanthropic causes. Whatever your sphere of influence, staying connected can help serve your professional goals.
