Life at Deloitte

Reflections from partners

How does our commitment to excellence, quality and value root itself in the day-to-day lives of our partners? Read what some of our partners - both working and retired - have to say about what it means to be a member of Deloitte.

Gary Nott
I started with the firm in 1961 at the ripe old age of 17. Soon I will have spent a 45-year career with this firm. It’s been my family and my life. The firm I joined built the foundations for today’s shared values. Those who went before have left their legacy of integrity, the value proposition, conduct and commitment. Today we record them and recite them to make sure that our people carry the shared values on into the future. That is so important.

I have always been proud of pursuing my career at a firm that embodies the values I most believe in. Achieving excellence, integrity and respect for people are key. Our people proudly promote this culture and share the same values. As I look back over the years, I am convinced that it is by upholding these principles that we have earned clients’ trust and have been successful.

I joined the Toronto office of a predecessor firm 35 years ago, and have spent about 10 years at Winspear Higgins, 10 years at Deloitte Haskins & Sells, and 15 years at Deloitte. The changes in the firm and in the auditing profession during that time are too numerous to even contemplate. However, it's the things that haven't changed that I continue to enjoy: working with colleagues who are rich in talent, energy and integrity, providing the highest quality services to interesting clients, and the intellectual challenges inherent in our profession. It's been hugely rewarding, and I am very much looking forward to the next few years at Deloitte.

When I became a partner 25 years ago, among all the usual congratulations, I remember one best. It was from a senior, who said 'Congratulations on making it to where the air is thin.' It made me think about what I needed to do to deserve my position as partner. I thought that I would always try to do the right thing. And you know what? It pays back in spades. Our environment is a challenging one now, like never before. Quality and excellence will have to be embedded in all of us; it's a matter of survival — but what an opportunity to elevate Deloitte to greatness. Carpe diem: we must seize the day, and do the right thing.

Harold Bridge
Over my 30 years as a partner with this great firm, I've witnessed the dedication of our partners and our staff to the guiding principles of excellent client service, professional excellence, and personal and professional integrity. During our growth from number eight to number one, we've worked hard to nurture our shared values, and maintain our commitment to each other, both professionally and personally. Professional excellence, integrity, independence, mutual respect, mutual accountability and loyalty all take a lifetime to build. Guard them well, and our success will be assured well into the future.
