Looking back with pride

Looking around the corner — and the world

Past. Present. Future. The passage of time has been very much on our minds during the 150th anniversary year of Deloitte in Canada. In reviewing the firm’s archives — and the history of Canada — we are reminded that many of today’s significant concerns like upheavals in the financial and capital markets, wildly fluctuating oil prices and pandemics are not new issues. When a business is as old as ours, it is doubtless that one of our predecessor firms has had to deal with a similar situation. Helping our clients overcome adversity and prosper within a new and different environment has always been a hallmark of the firm known today as Deloitte.

We are honoured to be leading Deloitte into its 151st year in Canada. As we pour over the many wonderful stories that comprise our history, we are struck by how much there is to be learned from them. We doubt Philip S. Ross would have imagined that the firm he started, with its origins in the shipyard, would grow to be the largest professional services firm in the country. Then again, he had proven himself to be an enterprising man, so perhaps he did imagine it. As we look toward the next 150 years, the people of Deloitte will continue to make its founders proud with the things they imagine into being.

Things like playing a leading role in the burgeoning area of corporate responsibility, as both an advisor to our clients and a committed participant. Things like being known across Canada as an inclusive meritocracy, where diversity is a way of life. Things like developing innovative services for needs that have yet to surface.

We will continue to channel the spirit of our founders to serve our clients and our communities with innovation and energy. It is for this reason we come to work every day, and why we eagerly anticipate the future.

On the occasion of our 150th anniversary in Canada, we speak for all the people of Deloitte in offering heartfelt thanks to all our clients, our communities and our professions.
