Our role at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games

February 12, 2010, was an important date in Canadian history as the 2010 Winter Games took centre stage in Vancouver. The mission of VANOC — the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games — was to ‘touch the soul of the nation and inspire the world by creating and delivering an extraordinary Olympic and Paralympic experience with lasting legacies.’

As the Official Professional Services Provider to the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games, Deloitte was proud to play a part in helping VANOC achieve its mission. We provided full-time resources to work in the finance group at VANOC as well as delivered Internal Audit, Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability, French Translation, Corporate Finance, Dissolution Consulting, Tax and a variety of other services.

Deloitte’s selection by VANOC speaks to our depth and breadth of experience in a wide range of professional services and our winning mix of local expertise supported by professionals across Canada, combined with global connections and experience. It also reflects our commitment to our communities whom we support as a firm and as individuals, and to the pride we have in our country and our athletes and coaches.

This sponsorship provided wonderful opportunities for our people to get involved and they were excited about the role they played in helping VANOC achieve its goals for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games. At Deloitte, we continue to have the same passion to perform as the athletes who made our nation proud in 2010.

How Deloitte contributed

  • Sustainability
As sustainability was a key issue for the 2010 Winter Games, VANOC had engaged Deloitte to provide recommendations for supplier code of conduct enhancement and to pilot a supplier assessment program.
  • Transportation
Deloitte helped deliver a 2010 Winter Games readiness workshop to organizations in the downtown Vancouver area. The focus was to help organizations prepare their Games readiness plans.
  • Supplier risk
VANOC needed to assess the risk of potential supply disruptions as a result of the challenging economic climate. Deloitte performed financial due diligence and delivered reports summarizing the risk level for each supplier.
  • Value-in-kind sponsorship
VANOC faced challenges with certain value-in-kind sponsorships for the 2010 Winter Games. Deloitte assisted in advancing negotiations and releasing value in these non-cash convertible sponsorships.
  • Translation services
Deloitte provided English-to-French translation services for the 2010 Winter Games. Our translators translated a wide variety of materials, including publications, the Spectator Guide and oral announcements.
  • Procurement review
VANOC engaged Deloitte to review its procurement processes and systems. The result was a series of recommendations to help the procurement department improve its performance.
  • Report on ticketing compliance
Deloitte reviewed the ticketing process for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. The focus was to ensure that oversubscribed events were managed through a lottery system that allotted tickets fairly and in compliance with the established criteria.
  • Financial advisory services
Deloitte was asked to provide Financial advisory services for the 2010 Winter Games. In light of the economic context, VANOC needed to quantify potential revenue risks to enable contingency planning.
