Ready or Not? Preparing youth for 21st century responsible citizenship |
![]() |
The trend in declining voter turnout and other forms of democratic participation show that Canadians are disengaging from active expressions of citizenship. The greatest declines in participation have occurred among younger generations, suggesting formal education has not adequately prepared young people to be empowered or engaged citizens. In Ready or Not? Preparing youth for 21st century responsible citizenship, Deloitte and Learning for a Sustainable Future describe the steps needed to prepare students for their roles as citizens and leaders. |
This paper is the fruit of roundtable discussions hosted by Deloitte and Learning for a Sustainable Future in the spring of 2012 that brought over 100 education, business and civil society leaders together in Toronto, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Halifax.
Discussions focused on these questions:
- What do children and youth need to know, do, and value by the time they leave school in order to ensure they are responsible, active, and contributing citizens?
- How can formal education be reoriented to meet these goals?
