The Social Progress Index combines a number of social and environmental indicators coming from international databases, in addition to perception surveys, for the purpose of identifying the scenario, challenges and opportunities for countries' social progress.
Developed by the global expert on competitiveness, Michael Porter, and economists of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the index is supported by private companies and non-profit institutions, such as Deloitte, the Skoll Foundation, Fundación Avina, Cisco e Banco Compartanos. In its first year of implementation, the SPI has already generated information and analyses on the social context of approximately 50 countries.
Deloitte, one of the global partners of SPI, presented an event on September 4th 2013. Porter explained the “Social Progress Index” and its application to the Brazilian reality.
