Green IT

The fast-track to enterprise sustainability

DOWNLOAD
Green IT uses good business principles to reduce an organisation's impact on the environment whilst also reducing costs and improving service.

For decades, the business community has mainly viewed the environment as a cost to be avoided or marginalized. Today, an enormous perceptual shift is underway, which we call “the green wave.” From magazines to television to movies, the concept of “going green,” which emphasizes environmental sustainability and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, has worked its way into the foreground of public consciousness. Depending on your view, “going green” may or may not be a priority, but companies have no choice but to ride the “green wave” or get knocked over by it. Green IT is one of the main drivers towards becoming a green organisation. Not only does it allow organisation’s to ride the ‘green wave’, Green IT also results in tangible business benefits and cost savings.

Green IT – Business benefits

One of Green IT’s outcomes is that consuming less electricity results in lower carbon emissions. This, in combination with optimising sourcing, disposal, development and other processes significantly contributes to corporate social responsibility and the corporate image. Another  benefit of Green IT is that it allows to structurally lower IT operational and facilities costs. So can server utilisation be optimised, computers can be shut down when not at work and facilities – such as data centers - can be reorganised or redesigned to be more cost efficient. These actions have a direct impact on the organisation’s bottom line and generally have a very short return on investment. Often, there are many quick win projects that can be engaged, requiring little investment and yet offering a solid return.
