Elke KMO maakt een evolutie van toenemende professionalisering door. Een tastbare uiting daarvan is de uitbouw van de interne rapportering. Bij een startende onderneming is management informatie bijna onbestaande. Er is natuurlijk de jaarrekening, maar die komt er vooral omwille van de wettelijke verplichting. Zij laat trouwens niet toe om het dagelijkse reilen en zeilen van de organisatie op te volgen. Een ‘volwassen’ bedrijf volgt de operaties veel dichter op, met bijvoorbeeld maandelijkse financiële prestatiestaten en niet-financiële metingen. Dat zijn de elementen van een uitgebouwd ‘performance management’.
