‘Shared Services’ of ‘gedeeld dienstencentrum’ is een concept dat ondanks zijn lange historiek, actueel blijft. Dat komt door zijn eenvoud en door de bewezen meerwaarde over industrieën en continenten heen. Het wetgevende en fiscale kader in de VS was een gezonde voedingbodem voor het ontstaan, waarbij grote multinationals zoals General Electric en enkele reuzen uit de elektronica-, automobiel- en farmasector voorop liepen. Hoewel de implementatie in Europa niet van een leien dakje liep, kreeg de techniek toch snel voet aan wal in Europa en Azië. Gedreven door de voordelen van het concept leerde de zakenwereld vlug en vond Europa pasklare oplossingen voor wetgevende en fiscale hindernissen onderweg.
