Update on the EU negotiations for Free Trade Agreements

It seems that in the short term, the European Union will not slow down its very active agenda on negotiations for Free Trade Agreements (FTAs). On 18 July, the European Commission officially asked Member States for their consent to open free trade negotiations with Japan. If negotiations start, non-tariff barriers will certainly be one of the main obstacles. At the same time, negotiations for a region-to-region FTA with Mercosur have been suspended. Although little progress was achieved in the last year, the recent political events in Paraguay are mentioned as the cause for the suspension. Both Parties aim to resume negotiations in April 2013.
