7.00 AM time to rise, half an hour earlier than yesterday. 7.45 AM our early birds have finished breakfast and are on their bikes, ready to go. 190 kilometers through the Champagne region with only water and some extra vitamins in our bottles, it will be a long day. What Deloitte partners are prepared to bear for charity!
The weather forecast predicted rain all day. Instead we got sunny weather with just enough showers to test our raincoats. On top of that we had the wind in our back. Boreas, the Greek god of the North wind was with us today!
Besides the good weather we enjoyed some good meals. For lunch we were offered a three course meal. What Deloitte partners are prepared to bear for charity! As a starter we got spaghetti with sauce, as main course we were offered spaghetti without sauce and as dessert we received the sauce. At 16.00 PM after about 145 km we stopped for a snack: pizza! The restaurant operator was so impressed by the Deloitte athletes that he insisted to have a photo with the team. Imagine what this did to our egos.
Spouses hold your breath, because we have bad news! Some of our bikers were victim of a terrible chain collision. Did Piet V. break unexpectedly or did he have a problem with his chain, or was it Styn D. who did not pay attention when he crashed into Piet? Seen the seniority of both we assume Styn D. was the cause, although we will probably never know. Because of the brutal stop Styn D. made Marc B. could not help crashing into the duo. The effects were terrible. Piet’s chain of his bike cased and his pants was torn, Styn D. had a terrible scratch on his Merckx and Marc B. still has to consult with his lawyers and insurance experts before he is prepared to reveal the damage. To be continued.
Chains did cause quite some issues today. Also Frank V’s chain left the gear and went looking for new horizons.
At 17.30 PM after 9 hours on their bike the whole team arrived at Hotel Logis aux Maisons in Maisons les Chaource, where to first five enjoyed a warm shower. The other 15 either underwent a cold shower or treated their colleagues to a smell feast. The Hotel offered us in exchange free (and cold) champagne (to start a blanc de blanc, followed by a blanc de noir and to end a rosé de riceys) . What Deloitte partners are prepared to bear for charity…!
