On 22 February 2008, the Federal Government asked the Board of Taxation to review the tax arrangements for managed investment trusts. The Board released its discussion paper yesterday, outlining the various issues and options for reform. The implications of any reforms will extend beyond the tax function into the practical aspects of MITs, including the development of distribution policies and investment management.
Deloitte's tax alert summarises the discussion paper and the options for reform, and offers our preliminary observations about the issues. The Board has invited submissions on the discussion paper (by 19 December 2008) - a once in a generation opportunity to have your say on the development of a specific tax regime for MITs. We recommend that fund managers consider the options and issues outlined in the alert to help structure your submission appropriately.
