Ashley is the leader of the Deloitte Tax Controversy practice. He has over 25 years income tax experience including 20 years with the Australian Taxation Office. He is a Fellow of the Taxation Institute of Australia and an Associate of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Australia.
Ashley specialises in the management of ATO reviews, audits and objections, particularly those with complex and potentially significant tax exposures. Ashley has a deep knowledge of ATO operational policies and decision making processes (including settlements, rulings, audits, assessment powers and the General Anti-Avoidance Rule Panel) and has excellent relationships with Senior ATO Officers. Since leaving the ATO as Senior Assistant Commissioner in 2007, Ashley has advised more than 150 corporate and private clients on Tax Controversy matters.
In doing so, he has developed extensive expertise in dealing with technical and practical issues that arise in ATO audits, including information gathering powers, the ATOs power to amend assessments, statutory interpretation, rules of evidence, and dealing with the ATO to effectively resolve tax disputes.
During his time at the ATO Ashley was the National Segment Leader of the Financial Services Industry Group and the leader of several policy and legislation projects including thin capitalisation (and 25-90) and TOFA. Ashley has many excellent relationships within the ATO, particularly at senior levels in Large Business, SME and Tax Counsel Network.
