What the future holds for finance and CFOsReprinted from Financial Executive, December 2006 |
Sam Silvers, principal, Deloitte Consulting, is quoted in the December 2006 issue of Financial Executive in an article titled “What Does the Future Hold, for Finance and CFOs?” Sam talks about how the role of finance is changing, becoming more complex and is taking on greater responsibilities outside of the traditional role of stewardship.
In the article, Sam describes the ‘ Four Faces of the CFO’:
- Steward: Protect and preserve the assets of the organisation
- Operator: Balance capabilities, costs and service levels to fulfill the finance organisation’s responsibilities
- Strategist: Provide financial leadership in determining strategic business direction and align financial strategies
- Catalyst: Stimulate behaviours across the organisation to achieve strategic and financial objectives
Sam says, “In the future, many CFOs will continue to grapple with an expanded scope of responsibility while they drive — or adapt to — strategic shifts and changes in their company’s business model, while ensuring that the finance organisation is aligned. Regulatory scrutiny will still weigh heavily, and CFOs will continue to express feeling a greater degree of personal risk.”
